Accuracy & Consistency

Ball Speed

The velocity of the ball immediately after contact with the foot, measured in miles per hour (mph). Ball speed is a fundamental indicator of leg strength and technique efficiency.

Why it matters: Higher ball speed generally correlates with distance potential and is crucial for field goal kickers who need the ball to travel far and fast. It's also an indicator of how "live" a leg is.

Launch Angle

The angle at which the ball leaves the foot relative to the ground, measured in degrees. Launch angle determines the trajectory of the kick and affects both distance and hang time.

Why it matters: For punters, a higher launch angle (48-52 degrees) creates more hang time. For field goal kickers, the optimal angle balances getting over the line while maintaining distance. Too steep = shorter kicks. Too flat = blocked kicks.

LOS Height (Height at Line of Scrimmage)

The height of the ball as it crosses the line of scrimmage, measured in feet. This is the critical "block avoidance" metric for field goal kickers.

Why it matters: Blocked kicks are devastating. A ball that's only 9 feet high at the LOS is blockable. NFL-caliber kickers consistently clear 12+ feet at the line, making blocks nearly impossible even with a good rush.

Apex

The maximum height achieved by the ball during its flight, measured in feet. Apex is directly related to hang time - higher apex generally means longer hang time.

Why it matters: For punters, a high apex creates the hang time needed for coverage. For field goal kickers, apex indicates trajectory efficiency. An NFL-caliber punt apex of 80 feet gives the ball time to descend while coverage sprints downfield.

Spin Rate

The rotational speed of the ball measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Spin rate affects ball stability, carry, and how the ball behaves in the air.

Why it matters: Consistent spin rate indicates repeatable technique. The standard deviation of spin rate across multiple kicks shows how consistent a kicker is - lower deviation = more consistency = more reliable performance under pressure.

Hang Time

The total time the ball is in the air from contact to catch or landing. For punters, this is the critical "coverage" metric - more hang time means more time for your coverage team to get downfield and make the tackle.

Why it matters: A punt with 4.5+ seconds of hang time is considered elite. It gives coverage players time to sprint 40+ yards downfield before the returner can catch and move. Hang time is often weighted more heavily than raw distance.

Distance

Kick length — the total yardage the ball travels.

Why it matters: Distance sets the baseline range a kicker can be trusted at, from kickoffs to long field goal attempts.

3D Trajectory

A full view of the flight path and landing spot.

Why it matters: Seeing the whole flight path together with where the ball lands makes it easier to evaluate shape and placement, not just the final result.

Operation Time

The total time from snap to kick, combining the snapper's delivery time, holder's setup time, and kicker's approach. This is a team metric that measures the entire operation.

Why it matters: Speed kills - or saves. A fast operation time (1.25-1.30 seconds) gives the rush less time to get to the kicker. Slow operations (1.4+ seconds) are more likely to be blocked. The best operations are smooth AND fast.

Side (Projected)

Launch direction relative to the center of the goalposts.

Why it matters: It shows which way a kick is trending before it ever reaches the uprights, separate from how far left or right it ends up.

Movement

How far the ball moves from its initial path, relative to the goalposts.

Why it matters: Movement isolates how much a kick drifts off its intended line, independent of the overall distance it travels.

Good From Distance

The projected maximum distance from which a kicker can make a field goal, calculated based on ball speed, launch angle, and other factors. This is a predictive metric.

Why it matters: This metric tells coaches what range they can count on. A "Good From 57" kicker gives the offense confidence to go for it from the 40-yard line instead of punting. It directly impacts game strategy.

+/- Standard Deviation

Consistency — the spread of results, shown as one standard deviation.

Why it matters: A tighter spread means a kicker is repeating the same result more often, which is generally what coaches mean by "consistent."

Goal Cross Position

Where the ball crosses the uprights. Smaller is closer to center.

Why it matters: It shows how much margin a kick had between the posts, beyond simply whether it was ruled good or no good.

Accuracy Score

Closer to 100 means more kicks land in the middle. Weighted by distance.

Why it matters: Because it's weighted by distance, the score gives a single number for comparing accuracy across kicks of different lengths.
